Teaching
Teaching has been a major part of my life since I first began in 1994 as a swim teacher. I have since realised a love for professional and higher education teaching, for which I developed a teaching practice framework comprising three pillars:
Reflexive practice for social justice
Learning as dialogue
Theoretical grounding
I can provide a copy of my teaching and learning philosophy upon request.
I am an Associate Fellow of Advance HE (previously the Higher Education Academy) and hold a Certificate of University Teaching (non-award; Griffith University). My specialties are well-suited for teaching, including qualitative research methodologies, health promotion and health policy, health equity, population and public health, participatory processes and research, diversity equity and inclusion, and working in cross-cultural settings.
In addition to health and social services sector training, and a role in developing Griffith University’s first Bachelor of Public Health and Health Promotion, I have held lecturer/guest lecturer, tutor and assessor roles for the following courses:
INDH5213 Goals, Objectives and Strategies (The University of Sydney Indigenous Health Promotion students)
SWB109 Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and people (Queensland University of Technology [QUT] nursing, environmental health, public health and social work students)
NSB017 Diversity in health – Cultural safety and Indigenous perspectives (QUT nursing students)
SWB105 Human Rights and Ethics (QUT social work and public health students)
PUN635 Evidence Based Health Policy (QUT masters-level students)
PBH1977 Health Promotion (Griffith University nursing and environmental health students)
What People Are Saying
Really enjoyed this directed opportunity to look deeply into myself to assess my beliefs, assumptions, etc and gain an understanding of where I came from, look at areas for improvement. I hope now that I will be aware of the barriers that exist for some people and offer care that is culturally safe to all. THANK YOU!

LOVED THE TUTES! I enjoyed everything from: the way the room was set up, to the discussions shared and the general social/forum like atmosphere. I also enjoyed Karen's insights and her openness to not enforce her opinions as being "the right way" but allowing us to form our own opinions.
